Captivate and Flash Lite 2: create mobile tutorials
For a project I was working on, I made a hard use of Adobe Captivate to create audio and video tutorials.
You know Captivate is a great software that allows to make desktop recording and create an interactive tutorials in SWF format !
Captivate creates SWF for Flash Player 7.
Flash Lite 2 supports Flash Player 7.
This brings me to try to create a tutorial for playing in my mobile device via Flash Lite 2.
After some tests I made it work !!
It's possible to load Captivate movies into mobile devices exporting it for Flash Lite 2 player !
These are some advices that make your life easier for esporting a Captivate movies for Flash Lite 2, but if you want to see the final result download the swf files :
Download captivate_flash_lite_1.swf (first test with a simple desktop recording)
Download captivate_flash_lite_2.swf (a test with the recording of Flash 8 IDE)
1.The Resolution issue
I started from recording my desktop with a resolution of 800x600 px and after esporting I forced the width and height dimension to 176x208 but all the texts became illegible.
So the only way to work it's to capture a movie with Captivate using the Custom Size option (that allow you to define a precise size and position for the recording area) and setting the width to 176 and the height to 208.
2. The Breeze Metadata Issue
Captivate supports AICC and Captivate content is SCORM 2004 and SCORM 1.2 certified, making it easy to deploy simulations through any Learning Management System. In addition, you can integrate Captivate projects with Macromedia Breeze, Macromedia Authorware, and the Questionmark Perception assessment tool.
But all of these features are not good for Flash Lite. So you have to uncheck all of them in order to make your movie works for your mobile.
You have to pay attention to some settings :
- uncheck the 508 compliant option
- reduce the frames per seconds to 15
- reduce the JPEG image quality to 75%
- uncheck Include Breeze metadata option

I am using Flash Lite 2.1 for smartphones on my HTC s710. It works just fine. All the graphics must be scaled to fit the screen. If I scale images in Captivate they look a little blurry in the Flash file. When I add a next button (On Sucess: Contine or Go to next slide)I can highlight the button, but it cant be pressed to continue.
