Selling Flash Lite contents directly through Verizon Wireless

If you visit  the  Mobile & Devices Developer Center you'll see a new page (similar to the Flex Developer Center page) with a well-organized contents.
You can now simply access to samples, quick starts,  donwloads, communities and the cool "Sell your Content" section :

Today you can sell your Flash Lite applications and content to Verizon Wireless customers in the United States, and soon for consumers using Nokia handsets in the US and other regions.

There are two ways: directly through Verizon Wireless or indirectly through a content catalog partner. Depending on what you create, you'll have to select the best way to sell your Flash Lite application or content.

Directly through Verizon Wireless

This is where you develop a Flash Lite for BREW application, submit to National Software Testing Labs(NSTL) for testing, define pricing, and Verizon Wireless may select.  Verizon Wireless can then select your application to be part of their Flash Lite applications. If you’re interested in having a direct relationship with Verizon Wireless then this is the path you should take.

Apollo HTML engine (WebKit) is also mobile friendly

At the MAX Adobe revealed the HTML engine that will be used by Apollo, the WebKit.
Other than beign an open source project, the WebKit engine is mobile friendly.
In fact the  Web browser for Nokia S60 is based on the WebCore and JavaScriptCore components of Apple's Safari Web Kit that Apple uses in its Safari browser (the same used by Apollo).

The WebCore and JavaScriptCore elements are from Apple Computer, which uses them in its popular Safari browser, and are covered by the LGPL open source license. These components in turn are based on KHTML and KJS from KDE's Konqueror open source project. See http://developer.apple.com/darwin/projects/webcore/ for details.

Flash Media Server 3, call for features from Adobe

Adobe is asking to the community to submit ideas and suggestions for the next Flash Media Server 3 (via FlashComGuru) :

Use the comment thread here for suggestions and recommendations for the next version of Flash Media Server. The FMS team will monitor and reply in the thread when necessary.

Flex Datagrid 's tooltip using the itemRollOut event

Datagrid Flex component is a very powerful tool to display data. For an enterprise application we're trying to create a tooltip only if the content of the row data is bigger than the width of the row.
We solved the problem using the itemRenderer, but I had some strange behaviours using the itemRollOver.
The itemRollOver is an event of the  ListBase class, the base class for controls that represent lists of items that can have one or more selected and can scroll through the items.
This is the MXML code :

These are the two event handler functions :

Apollo will revolutionize the web

This is what Bruce Chizen said at the MAX Keynote session :

"The innovation we are most excited about," said Bruce Chizen, Adobe's CEO, "is Apollo, which we believe will revolutionize the way the world will interact with the Web in the future." He was speaking here in Las Vegas at MAX 2006, the biggest ever Adobe developer conference.

"The possibilities for Adobe and you the developer community," he told the 3000 or so assembled attendees, "are endless."

Cairngorm 2.1 is about to be realesed

During the Cairnorgm session held by Steven Webster, he announced that today Adobe is about to released the Cairngorm 2.1 for Flex 2.
This new version of the microarchitecture begins to embrace neterprise rich internet application best practise.
These are some of the new features :

• security by default
• standardized naming conventions with Flex SDK
• the IServicelocator interface
• more thinking around services and ServiceLocator
• internationalization of Error messages
• updated ASDoc that describes the framework
• use of ServiceLocator to locate data services

Apollo Lesson #2: code to create and manipulate OS Window

With Apollo developers will be able to create and manipulate OS window.
In Apollo windows are handled as objects :

win.init(initOption);

So you create an instance of the Window Class, an instance of the WindowInitOption Class and set their properties.
It's cool to see how simple is.

Manipulating OS windows you can create cool desktop applications without being frustrated to use the classic and annoying rectangular-shaped window.

FlexGala, the Flex italian community reached 250 members

We're proud to announce that the Flex Italian community is growing day by day.
FlexGala, the Adobe Official User Group, reached the number of 250 registered members in less than 1 month.

I published about 9 articles  and 16 video tutorials on Flex and Flex Data Services so far.
And we planned to publish 4 new contents every week.
It's a lot of learning materials.
All for free and all in italian language !

Spry and Apollo integration to understand the AJAX support

I'm taking a few moments of relax downloading my last photos from my digital camera to my laptop.
I found this cool image that explains how much the Apollo supports complex AJAX application :

This is a SPRY web application loaded into Apollo and launched as desktop app.
Everything works great, without adding or changing a line of code !
Isn't that incredible ?

Motivation for supporting HTML/AJAX in Apollo

The Apollo team gave us some reasons on why they chose to support HTML and AJAX in Apollo.
I thought the only reason was because it's cool, instead they said they made it for :

• reusing of existing web applications and services (sites, maps, etc..)
• leveraging AJAX developers knowledge
• supporting dynamic CSS box model layout
• major use cases
• constructing complex HTML user interfaces
