Flash Lite Friday Tip of the Day

Scott has started a new initiative based on the Flash Lite Friday Digest, condensed and organized set of links that help users to get a weekly overview on the Flash Lite mobile world: Flash Lite Friday Tip of the Day.

The Flash Lite Friday Tip of the Day is a post where Scott posts a piece of code or tip every Friday in regards to Flash Lite (1.1, 2.x, 3.x) or Flash Mobile.
This week Scott published the third tip sice the beginning :

Great idea Scott, as usual !

Flash Lite Friday Digest #17 : a compact weekly overview from the world of Flash Lite

I'm not (totally) mad.... I know it's not friday.
But I wanted to try giving a second chance to the Flash Lite Friday Digest.

Ffldigest_17 I think  that the FlashLite Friday Digest initiative was great.  A condensed and organized set of links created by users to help users to get a weekly overview on the Flash Lite mobile world.
When I first created it I made it for my own convenience :) And it worked. I could easily find all the links I needed and I reached and knew new contents dedicated to Flash Lite.

Last post was written by Darren (thank you mate) and it was long time ago !
So I would try again and start Flash Lite Friday Digest again.

This is my collection of links for the past week :

I'll start with some news on Chumby. Chumby was announced one year ago and the company has made upgrades to the hardware and sofware that makes up the device, and say they will make it available for sale in a couple of months. The biggest change is that Chumby now runs Flash Lite 3, which is the first mobile version of Flash to support streaming audio and video. Users can now run music or video over the Internet and play it on the Chumby. (Chumby: One Year Later).

Yesterday a Flash Lite page was added and I'm pretty sure we'll see more and more documentations from S60 guys !

For now you can read a White paper on S60 and Flash Lite – an emerging global ecosystem, white paper, May 2006, (PDF 2 MB)

S60 wrote that with Flash Lite:

  • The S60 community gets access to a whole new developer base – with some 2 million passionate developers and designers, offering exciting new content and applications with very short lead times
  • The Extensibility of S60 is further improved – for standalone applications, browsing, personalization features, user interface extension components, and more
  • S60 Licensees can opt-in for a well-integrated version of the player with enhancements especially optimized for S60-based devices.

Flash Lite Friday Digest #2: a compact weekly overview from the world of Flash Lite

Flash_lite_friday_2 Flash Lite Friday Digest is a condensed and organized set of links that help users to get a weekly overview on Flash Lite mobile world.
This week issue of Flash Lite Friday Digest starts with two great articles on Flash Lite 2 :

Mark Horsel, after playing around with Falsh Lite development, gave us the reason why he's disappointed about this technology :

  1. FlashLite isn’t a develop once use everywhere technology, yes things are easier than they are in JAVA but its not as simple as its sometimes portrayed.
  2. Performance on devices generally is poor, so forget complex motion graphics
  3. Flashlite 1.1 is a real pain to work with, so for a while at least its going to be very simple games or applications

This is just a summary so read his "Show me the money - Flash on Devices" post and don't miss some good comments (John Dowdell, Bill Perry and Alessandro).

Tim came back blogging and he explain why many people are still trying to write off J2ME and companies like Everypoint are interesting in that they are providing viable solutions for real time mobile content delivery. He thinks it also requires us to revisit some Flash Lite vs J2ME comparisons.
So in order to have a reply to his  last question "What's this mean for FlashLite and FlashCast?" you have to read the full post : Flash Lite / Flash Cast alternatives.

On this topic I wrote a post about an interesting emerging technology by Openwave : Openwave MIDAS   (Mobile Integrated Dynamic Application System), that in practise, is a scripted application environment that lets operators manage the device UIs of their subscribers, including pushing new applications to the phones out there.
Could it be a Flash Lite / Flash Cast competitor ?

Bill Perry pointed out some great news for developers : the Flash Lite 2 Update availability in International Languages and 3 new Flash Mobile forums from Adobe ! Great resources for the resto of us !

Richard Legget from the last London MMUG randomly selected the winner from his  mobile phone with a very simple little Flash Lite 1.1 app at the end of the night !
From his blog you can download this funny application and modify it to be the next winner ! :)

Scott keep us updated wiht the release of iriver U10 1.27 MTP Firmware update  and with the Adobe Six Stories mini site, a similar vein to the mobile Engage campaign, but encompasses more of the product line from Adobe. Now complete with all the products … Flash, Flash Lite, etc.

Two new phones added to Flash Lite world : Samsung SCH-V910 Handset (Flash Lite UI) and Nokia 3250.

And the winner is .... Flash Lite.
CMP Media Announces Winners for the 16th Annual Jolt Product Excellence & Productivity Awards (via Alessandro)  :

Last but not least a new great resource for Flash Lite developers : Flash Lite for Mobile Game Developers blog. by Miikka Lyytikäinen CEO of Aniway.
This blog concentrates on mobile game development with Flash Lite, and issues relating to mobile game industry.

Productivity Winners:

  • – Carbide.c++ Express (Nokia)
  • Flash Lite 2.0 (Adobe)
  • – NetBeans IDE 4.1 (Sun Microsystems)

Flash Lite Friday Digest: a compact weekly overview from the world of Flash Lite

I love the concept behind Carnival of the Mobilists. It's a compact weekly overview of the most important mobile news and happenings.
I want to inspire from that :) and do the same for Flash Lite.
So here it is my first number of Flash Lite Friday Digest.

Flashlitefriday Flash Lite Friday Digest is a condensed and organized set of links that help users to get a weekly overview on Flash Lite mobile world !

Let's start from the Adobe's announcement of the final Flash Lite 2 Update for Flash 8 Professional . Once you download the update you're ready to start developing so you could evaluate to create Flash Lite content for U10; we have some interesting links from Justin where he shows us how fun is to make games for this device. He starts from the following problem: when you hook the device up to your computer you can see some directories, but there must be some that are simply not exposed. If you want to read the solution he gave you, go reading the H4X0R1Ng the U10 Interface post. Don't miss  the U10 Key Firing post, too !

After the end of Webdu 2006 (read Mike Chambers conference's keynotes) conference, Chris Blair give us a call with Zodal solutions and his Multi-Player Mobile Game with FLASH LITE 2 session.
Keep an eye on the ZoDAL news feeder on the front of the Zodal's website for more infomation about some upcoming free trial accounts for developers to easily plug their flash mobile projects into our FlashLite Remoting Gateway. Cool !

Last week I started a new activity on my blog for improving  my knowledge on User Interface and Game Design for mobile. My first mini interview is with the designer Juri Pratesi (Kurai.it) about his experience on mobile game designing at MicroForum International company.

When we talk about Flash Lite development we usually refer to develop contents for Nokia Series60 devices. Nick Gerig (Device54.com) gave us some few reasons why Flash Lite is failing with SonyEricsson in his Flash Lite and Sony Ericsson post.
Speaking of SonyEricsson read the announcement where Google and SonyEricsson declared that they are working closely together to integrate Google's Blogger and Web Search features on their mobile phones (see Sony Ericsson Bundles Google) and the recent partnership with Orange for distributing music contents.

Do you want more Flash Lite enabled phones ? This week you can add to your collection the Nokia E61 and Nokia E62 :) where you can read the first mobile magazine developed with Falsh Lite: Mobizines (by AllAboutSymbian).
Moreover with Mobizines, you could get Flash Lite 1.1 for free, installing the mobile magazine !

If you're still thinking to use J2ME instead of Flash Lite, you should read this article from Adobe Mobile and Devices Developer Center where the author chose the Stocks application from the example Demos project that comes with the J2ME Wireless Toolkit 2.2 from the Sun Developer Network and set to work on creating a Flash Lite–equivalent application. The author's conclusion is that once you start using Flash Lite, you won't want to stop !

Before leaving I want to point you out these cool links :

Please, feel free to leave your comments and let me  know what you think about this new initiative !
